The Corporate Closet: The Professional Lives of Gay Men in America
Published in Hardcover by Free Press (December, 1993)
Average review score:

NO STRAIGHT PERSON SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO READ THIS BOOK EVER!This book is a study of the tactics that gay men use to keep their sexual orientation hidden from their (often homophobic) co-workers. It scares me how accurate it is. Let me give you an example, I once had a male teacher who said, "I was once going out with this woman who blah, blah, blah." Well, many straight people would think, "Okay, girlfriend equals straight." But a critical reader would see that the man said, "Once!" Many openly gay men used to date women. This book mentions tactics like acting weird so that co-workers just dismiss you as asexual, emphasizing your love of sports in order to hide the fact that you're not involved with a woman, being so liberal that when you mention gay rights co-workers think you are a leftist rather than gay, etc. If straight people read this book, gay men would never be able to hide. This book was both a gift and a weapon. Some have critiqued it asking why anyone would want to study, and subconsciously encourage, men to be closeted. However, this book does talk to men about their being out in the workplace and how they did it. We need more studies like this. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. However, it could be incredibly dangerous if placed in the wrong hands.

The Cosmos: Astronomy in the New Millennium

The Cosmos: Astronomy in the New MillenniumThis is a five-star book! Designed as a textbook for basic astronomy courses, it also serves as a stand-alone book for the average person who wants seriously to find out more about the universe. The content is clear and easy to follow, moving from the earth through the solar system, stars, galaxies, black holes, quasars, and finally issues of cosmology. Pages are well laid-out for easy reading, and enhanced with beautiful four-color photos and diagrams. Each chapter concludes with a concept review and questions for reflection. Help in learning terminology is provided by boldfaced vocabulary throughout the book and a glossary at the end.
Special features that are set apart in the text, either on separate pages or in boxes, include interviews with people in astronomy (excellent diversity of persons), exercises in calculation, expanded "closer looks" at topics, biographies of scientific figures, and exercises in finding things in the sky.
Web-enhanced features for students that go with the book include www sites for more information using the Internet, web-links, chapter maps, quizzes, and even a source on popular misconceptions. Instructors' ancillary materials include photo resource catalog, overhead transparencies/slides, and a computerized test bank.
You don't have to be a scientist to read this book! Anyone can learn a great deal about the universe from these 395 pages. Pasachoff and Filippenko have produced a winner. Enjoy!

Counsel from Psalm 119
Published in Paperback by Timeless Texts (December, 1998)
Average review score:

A Book for Counseling and Personal Spiritual GrowthPsalm 119 is a prayer to God that addresses practically every problem and situation in life. This psalm provides an excellent and comprehensive source of help for anyone in the area of counseling. In his book, "Counsel from Psalm 119," Jay Adams explains ways to apply the Scripture text in Psalm 119 to counseling others, and to the personal spiritual growth of the counselor, as well as the counselee. Dr. Adams expounds upon the text and thoroughly discusses each verse in the psalm. He also provides profound insights into the importance of studying and meditating upon Scripture. He encourages the counselor to study the the Word of God personlly in order to be more equipped in teaching others the value of Scripture. I chose to read this book devotionally, taking a passage each day. Through the study of this book, I became more aware of the centrality of the Word in the life of a child of God I also discovered ways to apply Scripture to all situations and relationships. This is a book that every biblical counselor should have as a resource for helping others.

A Covert Life: Jay Lovestone Communist, Anti-Communist, and Spymaster
Published in Hardcover by Random House (March, 1999)
Average review score:

Iliad of the Cold WarThe only word forthis book is OPULENT.Imagine a book whose subject is the first half of the cold war.Now imagine that it reads like a novel, has a cast of characters any Hollywood producer would drool over, is informed by enough primary research to supply a shelf of books, brims with enough ORIGINAL, never published archival revelations to keep twenty academics in grants for a decade.Furthermore, imagine that it approaches it's highly politicized subject with no axe to grind, no kowtowing to this pundit or that one, and is primarily driven by the twin ideals of NARRATIVE and RESEARCH. That's what this is. What a read! Is bound to draw the ire of mousier historians who will resent it's independence from a whole industry of secondary sources. This is the Iliad of the Cold War, not some bundle of commentary.

Must-have for new writersAlthough this is not the thriller type of book that I usually enjoy it was a tremendous help with my writing. The book gave me excellent guidelines and tips and the incentive to finish one of my stories. This was a great start to my career and I can not thank Jay Amberg enough for writing it. I reccomend this book to anyone starting a writing career, or someone who just likes to write, it will give your writing direction.

The Crime Vaccine: How to End the Crime Epidemic
Published in Hardcover by Claitor's Law Books and Publishing (April, 1996)
Average review score:

Refreshing Approaching to solving America's Crime ProblemMr. Marcus has carefully and thoroughly provided a logical and well researched explanation for the root cause of crime. In my experience with juvenile delinquents, everything that Mr. Marcus says holds true and the true beauty of it is in its simplicity!
After delving into the root cause of crime, Mr. Marcus then provides information on solutions, using a preventative approach, as well as rehabilitative one.
I would like to give a copy of this book to everyone involved in law enforcement, Departments of Correction, juvenile justice and criminal justice. It would definitely have them thinking beyond the prevailing theories regarding crime.
The Crime Vaccine makes so much sense in an area in which our nation has senselessly thrown so much money resulting in virtually no progress.

The Cross of Lorraine

Average review score:

A Brilliant WWII RomnaceThis novel tells the amazing story of two Americans who fight alongside the French Resistance during World War Two. It is brilliantly crafted with intricate believable characters who confront the adversities of war with true human desires and frailties. I have not read a true World War Two romance of this caliber since I finished my first reading of Winds of War and War and Remembrance. Anyone purchasing this book will not be disappointed; in fact, I'd dare say that they will be delighted!

Cry
Published in Paperback by Les Livres (December, 1992)
Average review score:

Electing a PresidentThis book is most relevant to understanding the electoral process that chooses the US president. The book reveals the facts often unknown to average voter. It gives reasons for design of the electoral process, reasons often hidden from the citizens. It is a book that shows the face of organizational evil that constantly lurks behind most social processes to protect the privileged at the expense of the masses. CRY is set in a fictional setting, but every piece is a factual component of the election process. The fictional setting makes it easy reading and lets the reader to think the consequences of facts learned. Given the events of recent presidential election, this is definitely a worthwhile book to read ... unless ... you don't want to know the facts and like it as it is.
